Alain LeRoy Locke was a gifted scholar, philosopher, and the “Father of the Harlem Renaissance”. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Harvard and became the first African-American Rhodes Scholar studying abroad at Oxford University and the University of Berlin. Locke later became a professor of philosophy at Howard University and helped to promote the work of many of the leading artists of the Harlem Renaissance.
